The Gifts and Two Ministries of the Holy Spirit - Introduction

By Norman Manzon

The first five studies linked to below cover the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are quite a few ministries of the Holy Spirit in various categories. The two covered here, the sixth link below, is Two Ministries of the Holy Spirit: Spirit Baptism and Spirit Filling. It was written to identify each and to distinguish between the two. Lord willing, more studies on the Spirit's ministries will be added.

One thing must be said at the outset. Many people believe that one is unable to function in the gifts of the Spirit unless they are first baptized by the Holy Spirit according to their understanding of the term, which is a second work of the Spirit subsequent to salvation for the purpose of empowerment. I and many others believe that is not true. All that is required for a believer to function in the gifts of the Spirit is being filled with the Spirit, which is radically different from being baptized by the Spirit. Baptism by the Spirit is simply the placement of the believer into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13) and into Christ (Romans 6:3, Galatians 3:7) at the moment of salvation; and it is a one-time event that does not ebb and flow. The filling of the Spirit is for empowerment to accomplish the works that the Lord wants the believer to do, which includes the gifts; and unlike Spirit baptism, the filling ebbs and flows. For much clarification on all of this please see my study, Two Ministries of the Holy Spirit: Spirit Filling and Spirit Baptism.

THE AMC STATEMENT* ON THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
We believe that at salvation the Holy Spirit imparts at least one spiritual gift to every believer for the purpose of edifying and equipping the body of Messiah. We believe that God sovereignly distributes Spiritual Gifts to believers and so giving undue emphasis to any one particular gift can be divisive. (Romans 8:13-14; 1 Corinthians 12:28-31; 13:1-3,13; 1 Corinthians 14:12, 19, 23, 27-28; Galatians 5:22-23)

THE AMC STATEMENT* ON THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Filling of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the filling of the Holy Spirit is the ongoing process of God to which we yield whereby He sanctifies us (sets apart) and brings forth the fruit of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:13-14; Galatians 5:22-23) * Full AMC Statement

Bible Study Project is currently seeking 501(c)3 status at which time
it will resume issuing tax deductible receipts for U.S. donors.
However, donations are still much needed, particularly for
the sponsorship of BSP literature in foreign languages,
and would be much appreciated!
Please pray about this.
Thank you.
